Storm Clouds & Sweet Smiles | Maternity Session at Fremont State Lakes
Some photo sessions are memorable because everything goes exactly as planned.
Others become unforgettable because they almost don't happen at all.
This beautiful maternity session at Fremont State Lakes in Fremont, Nebraska was one of those evenings.
Originally, we had this session scheduled for July 3rd at 8:00 p.m., but Nebraska weather had other plans. As storm clouds rolled in, Courtney and I made the decision to move our session up by just 30 minutes.
That simple decision ended up making all the difference.
Almost as soon as we finished photographing this sweet family, the rain began to fall.
Instead of canceling, we were given one of the most dramatic skies I've photographed in quite some time. The dark storm clouds created an incredible backdrop while still allowing enough light to capture every smile, every embrace, and every joyful moment before the weather rolled in.
Watching Families Grow Is One of the Greatest Gifts
This session was especially meaningful because this isn't the first chapter of their story that I've had the privilege of photographing.
I've known this family for several years, and it has been such an honor to document so many milestones along the way.
I've photographed their engagement, their wedding day, their first maternity session, their newborn session, family portraits, and now this beautiful maternity session as they prepare to welcome their second baby.
I've even photographed multiple members of their extended family over the years, including parents, siblings, and family portraits together.
As a photographer, there's nothing quite like watching families continue to grow and being invited back again and again to preserve those memories.
That trust is something I never take for granted.
One Happy Little Boy
If there was one star of the evening (besides Mom and Dad), it was little Caspin.
At just nine months old, he smiled almost the entire session.
He giggled, explored, loved being tossed into the air by Dad, and seemed completely fascinated by everything around him.
Those genuine expressions made photographing him incredibly easy, and I know these images will become even more meaningful as he gets older.
Soon he'll have an important new title:
Big Brother.
His baby sister will be joining the family soon, and I already can't wait to photograph her newborn session.
More Than Just Beautiful Photos
One of my favorite things about maternity sessions is documenting this unique season of anticipation.
There is excitement.
There is uncertainty.
There is joy.
There is a family standing on the edge of a brand-new chapter.
These moments pass so quickly, and photographs become a way to remember not just how life looked—but how it felt.
Even the approaching storm became part of their story.
Instead of taking away from the evening, it reminded us that sometimes the most beautiful moments happen when everything doesn't go exactly according to plan.
